Escape to Capri

My good friend Meg K. Adams, just went on a totally enviable trip to the Tyrrhenian Sea off of Italy’s coast. In short, she went to Capri! This island in the Gulf of Naples, is famed for its rugged landscape, upscale beach resorts and high-end shops selling handmade leather sandals and signature limoncello liqueur. Its skyline is a veritable rainbow of hyper saturated greens, whites and reds. However, it’s clear that blue is the predominate hue! Although Meg didn’t love Naples itself (she said it was pretty dirty and seedier than expected), she did contest to being able to find delicious fire-brick oven pizza at any side street – she chowed down in San Ferdinando, a southern district of Naples, on Via Partenope.

On the island of Capri, just about 12,000 residents call the limestone block home – yet as many as 20,000 visitors flock there daily in the busy season – doubling its capacity! You might be familiar with Capri without even realizing it. The Caprese salad gets its name from “salad of Capri” which is tomato, fresh mozzarella and basil with seasoning of salt and olive oil.

Capri’s most famous square is called Piazza Umberto I, but it’s locally known as “La piazzetta” (the square) or ”a chiazz”.  You can see it above with its gloriously strung festival lights. Meg stayed at the Hotel Relais Maresca, whose name means Sea View. She says that it was wonderful. There are fancier abides on the island, but everyone at the hotel was so nice and the views were spectacular. Meg exclaims, “We slept out on our balcony for part of a night just because we could!”

Meg’s Packing Hints:

  1. Buy a converter and then immediately lose it and have to buy a hair dryer in the UK.
  2. Wear jumpsuits everywhere you go.
  3. Order a new swimsuit that you are completely uncertain of sizing. Don’t think to order until a few days before you leave so that if it IS the wrong size, you are completely out of luck.
  4. Walk so much you have to leave your shoes behind because they are now full of holes.
  5. Disregard the logical amount of clothing you need for your trip and just PACK EVERYTHING. Leverage your Midwestern charm at the airport so they don’t charge you for your bag being WAY overweight.

Mixology (31)

Tom Mora, the designer behind J.Crew’s womenswear for the Winter 2014-2015 collection, was inspired by Berlin’s Weimar Republic of the 1920 and 1930’s. Think cabarets, coffee shops, Dada-ism, red lips, drop waists, trousers, short hair and Bauhaus-styles. This period is frequently cited as one of those with the highest level of intellectual production in human history; hello Einstein.

This Outfit:  J. Crew Women’s Fall-Winter 2014-2015 is slightly masculine and geometric, yet keeps it girly with tinges of burgundy, blue, navy, camel and pale pink.  // That Room:   A patterned bedroom from Better Homes & Gardens is not afraid to mix things stripes with wide strips, floral with geometry, and wicker with fabric. The patterns all mesh because they follow a specific color scheme. A lesson for interiors and clothing!

Continuing my J.Crew obsession, let’s rewind to Spring 2014’s Ready-to-Wear collection that included unfussy uniforms inspired by a laid-back surfer culture.  The palette is overtly minimal: black, white, and a punch of orange. The orange brings the summer, the sun, and the light. The fabrics are cut structurally and yet remain casual and crisp. The designer explained that the theme of summer on the Venice Lido, circa the turn of the twentieth century informed much of his thinking. “Back then, going to the beach meant dressing up,” he pointed out. “It was very polished.”

This Outfit:  Look 20 from the Spring 2014 collection reminds me of what a business woman would wear to a meeting on the Italian Riviera during the height of a heatwave. The chandelier, jeweled earrings bring sophistication. But, overall the shape remains boxy with geometry pervading the shirt, the shoes, and even lining of the shorts.  // That Room:  A daring black and white striped rug centers an otherwise stark and achromatic room. The bold pillows, side stool, and wall hanging bring life the room by adding electric orange. Continuing our time travels, the J. Crew Fall 2013 collection paid homage to opulent Morocco. The rich embellishments, heavy fabrics and deep hues conveyed a sense of North African royalty. The colors – burgundies and palatinates – played nice with the arabesques.  All looks were topped off with jewel details, glittery brocade and jacquard. Luxurious yet, sporty.

This Outfit: Look 14 from Fall 2013 combines the texture of a Kilim rug with a jacket. The moorish trellis (quatrefoil) pattern pervades the oxblood, silk shirt. The look remains athletic with tracksuit piping. The model’s vintage-inspired sunglasses are the colors of Moroccan sands.  //  That Room: A fashion designer’s oasis blends tribal artifacts with exuberant color. Liza Bruce and artist Nicholas Alvis Vega’s home near Marrakech features a 1940’s Yoruba armchair,  a carved-wood chair from Ethiopia, jewel tones, and a variety of West African accessories. The guest room, as photographed by Simin Upton for Elle Decor, features a Tuareg bed with pillows covered in silk from Uzbekistan.

The Wonderful Wizard of OZ

Meet OZ. OZ lives in Milan. OZ is an illustrator who rides a tiny red bike. OZ sends postcards and likes the Beatles in India. OZ drives a Yellow Fiat. OZ reads the news upside-down while wearing stripes. OZ hates blue ink pens. OZ is a nickname for Olimpia Zagnoli Zagnoli was born in 1984 in northern Italy.

Olimpia Zagnoli's Clodomiro as Featured by The Walkup

Together with her father, Miro Zagnoli, a photographer, Olimpia created Clodomiro. The duo’s family-run online shop features everyday objects which appeal to their taste. Their first project is a series of fine bone china plates with erotically-inspired imagery, conceptualized in Milan and produced in Stoke-On-Trent in the UK. Care for strawberries atop a vagina? Or Adam & Even with some spaghetti?

In 2013, she was presented the Communication Arts Award of Excellence for a series of illustrations done for Italian newspaper La Repubblica. On the Right is her illustration Italian magazine Internazionale urging people to support record stores not just on Record Store Day. Most importantly, they have a Record Store Day in Italy!
