It’s that time of year when Uber prices surge because of snow and sludge, the L train can’t be trusted, and cold hearts melt or grow 3 sizes too big. My studio, Brooklyn United, a web development and digital marketing agency, takes the idea of being “culture-led” very seriously. This year, we rapidly expanded, and chose a restaurant to match our motley retinue. We wound up in Bed-Stuy at Bedford Hall, a remarkably preserved slice of the prohibition era.
This combination of a cozy eatery, lounge, shuffleboard space, and pool hall is modeled after your uncle’s warm library, or like a scene out of Clue. Comfy leather chairs, minus the pretentious vibe. We came for the drink specials, and stayed for the surprise burlesque show!
My favorite part of the night, perhaps, was the fact that my husband donned a velvet smoking blazer replete with a satin color. He looked sharp! (I’m also in velvet, sporting a vintage LBD) Or, maybe it was when I won the award for “Deepest Reservoir of Obscure Facts (literature and fantasy edition) along with the beautiful, hardcover book Schottenfreude: German Words for the Human Condition. Regardless of best moment, I am thankful for a such a fun way to kickoff the holiday season.
Whenever and wherever your holidays, have a merry time! Thank you so much to the super talented, Brooklyn-based photographer, Yoonography, for the photographs in this post.
In the USA we spend, on average, 2087 hours a year at the office. You might be in a cubicle, a classroom, at home, on a plane or in a coffee shop. However, you’re spending a lot of your day there, why not have the space represent who you really are? Poppin was created to fill the design gap between the products we use for work and those available in the rest of our lives.
Sometimes I find myself reaching for a ballpoint pen so dull, a post-it note so ordinary, or a notepad so ho-hum that it’s hard to inspire oneself to be creative. How can we think outside the box when we’re writing in-between in the lines on standard, ruled-paper?
There’s plenty of science out there to suggest that pleasing surroundings inspire productivity. In fact, the entire field of organizational psychology is based on the idea that humans are affected by organizational culture, training, job design, safety and more. Our environment, ranging from colors to layout, deeply and sometimes subcounscious influences our state of mind.
Poppin believes you should be able to surround yourself with objects of beauty everywhere you go and in everything that you do. Whether you are making grocery lists, taking notes at the latest TED conference, or pitching the next big account, you should be able to do it with a smile and style. Poppin is not another office products company; they sell workstyle products.
Work Happy. And to prove it, Poppin has an hysterical page of “accessories for your accessories” and team awards like “Best Coffee Maker”, “Office Hipster” and “Most Tech Savvy”.
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust, only after feldspar. This is funny to me because I don’t think I have thought about, or even uttered the word feldspar since my 8th grade Earth Science course. So although quartz might be number two according to the earth, I would definitely rank the semi-precious gemstone higher.
Quartz is varied! Like a middle school mood ring, these rocks range from citrine to smoky grey, from milky white to kitten-nose pink. Because the mineral is so ubiquitous, it has been linked to human history in Irish burials, Pre-Columbian American tools, Australian aboriginal mythology and in East Asian jewelry.

Today, yours truly, sits atop the stuff! Under Manhattan Island is a 542 million year old Paleozoic crystalline rock formation that is made up of garnet, silliminate and quartz. Thanks to its strength, the island is still around. Pretty solid (on the Moh’s scale, har har)!
