Based on the West Coast, Tenae Stewart of Strawberry Moon Books & Boutique sells vintage (mostly leather-bound) books & handmade sundries for the discerning bibliophile. She supports the timeless experience of immersing oneself in a good book again and again (not everything is better digitally). Remember the feeling of crisp paper between your fingertips? The satisfaction of dog-earing a page? The heft and subsequent weight loss when a large volume is completed? If you, like Tenae and the great Thomas Jefferson agree that you “…cannot live without books” – then meander over to Strawberry Moon Books & Boutique.

A hardcover copy of Cabbages and Kings, a collection of short stories by O. Henry. This copy was printed by Doubleday, Page & Company, in 1917. This book features numerous short stories involving a small American town and the lives of the people who live there.

Tenae’s  inspiration to start the shop came from her longtime love of books (both reading and writing.) Some of her favorites include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Night Circus, all of Sherlock Holmes and My Gun is Quick. One of Tenae’s favorite parts of the job is “book hunting” at library sales, book fairs and hole-in-the-wall used bookstores! She’s basically a book detective.

A hardcover copy of The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, written in 1895. This particular copy was printed by Reader’s Digest in 1984.

Books are not just rewarding to read (quotes, new words, novel plots and ideas!!) – they are also great additions to a bookshelf as double duty, home decor.  The shop is the first step towards the owner’s  dream of creating a book and gift shop on the Pacific coast; Tenae hopes to expand into a brick-and-mortar location in the future.

The owner divides her time between classes, running her Etsy shop, volunteering as an art teacher at a local private school and working at my family’s flower and gift shop where she is a manager, buyer and display coordinator. How does this girl have time for a social life?

Tour de Brooklyn

Just as the Tour de France stops in many locations, so too, will this post feature a tour of many rooms I adore in various neighborhoods of Brooklyn!

Brooklyn Brownstone Home Decor Tour

Neon pillows, shag shams, clean white sheets, rustic wooden armoire, photographs leaning  and a paper lantern give this guest room a minimal, zen feeling. One could easily meditate on the wooden floors.

The devil is in the details, they say. The small, meticulous accents here include Wooden Birds by artist Kristian Vedel, a Rubik’s cube, a framed, vintage ACE playing card, milk-ware ceramics and more.

Bibliophiles take heed – even if your bookshelf isn’t towering and in need of a rolling ladder, use one anyway! And let a Maneki-neko (lucky, waving Cat) protect it all.

A decidedly mid-century modern lounge area is accented by a jute rug, mismatched but tonal pillows and tons of wooden details.

A hanging, circular mirror serves as a focal point and does double duty by expanding the small space through illusion.

Chihuly style blown glass becomes a centerpiece when stack like fruits in a bowl. Someone’s guitar is both a decorative item and utilitarian gathering point when company is over that can play. Finally, the kid;s third grade art project looks deceptively like collected African masks

The fifties accents – from the Calder mobile, to the oblong table, from the record player, to the artichoke, beige colored lounge chair – let the room live in a fun, yet updated timewarp.

Chevron

A chevron, in decoration is an inverted V-shaped pattern or insignia. It was traditionally used in architecture, pottery or military uniforms. Archaoelogists have found the  motif as early as 1800 BCE in Crete, in modern-day Greece. Taking a cue from the classics, Burberry rules the runway with butter toffee accents, distinctive chevron stripes, cashmere jacquard and oversized geometry.
